Classic Sausage Rolls Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 lb (450g) sausage meat (or remove the casing from sausages)
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs (optional, for texture)
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard (optional, for flavor)
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • ½ tsp onion powder (optional)
  • ½ tsp dried thyme or sage (optional)
  • Sesame seeds or poppy seeds (for topping, optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, mix sausage meat with salt, pepper, and optional seasonings (garlic powder, onion powder, mustard, herbs).
  3. Roll out the puff pastry into a large rectangle and cut it into two long strips.
  4. Divide the sausage mixture in half and shape each portion into a long log along the edge of each pastry strip.
  5. Brush one side of the pastry with beaten egg, then roll the pastry over the sausage filling, sealing the edge.
  6. Cut into smaller rolls (about 2-inch pieces) and place them on the baking tray, seam side down.
  7. Brush the tops with the remaining egg wash and sprinkle with sesame or poppy seeds if using.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed up.
  9. Let cool slightly before serving.
